Spanish province absorbs more immigrants than 18 European nations
The eastern Spanish province of Alicante takes in more immigrants than 18 European countries, the Centre for Research on the Social Integration and Training of Immigrants, or CeiMigra, said in a new report.
The study, "Migraciones y desarrollo" (Migration and Development), found that countries such as Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Cyprus, Portugal and Poland have fewer foreign-born residents than Alicante, which lies in the Mediterranean region of Valencia.
The report, which covers 2008, also found that Alicante is the Spanish province with the largest proportion of immigrants relative to its total population, with foreign-born residents accounting for 24 per cent of the population.
The province's immigrant population has soared 87 per cent since 2003 and 287 per cent since 2000.
Immigrants are projected to account for 1.8 million of the Valencia region's 6.6 million people, or 29 per cent, within 13 years, CeiMigra said.
Some 52 per cent of the immigrants will come from countries outside the European Union, while 48 per cent will come from European countries.
